Pediatric Dentistry/Family Dentistry in Irvine
Children need more than just cursory dental exams. A pediatric dentist reviews the child’s health history in detail, noting the health and condition of the teeth, gums, bone structure, head and neck. A pediatric dentist monitors jaw growth and dental development and evaluates oral habits such as thumb-sucking. A pediatric dentist uses these findings to diagnose the child’s condition, create a custom treatment plan and give instructions for home care.
A dentist or hygienist cleans the child’s teeth to remove plaque or calculus that can cause gum disease and tooth decay. We recommend cleanings and fluoride treatments twice a year to maintain your child’s dental health and prevent decay.
Your Child & X-rays
Children typically need more frequent X-rays than adults. Little mouths grow and change rapidly. Pediatric dentists are careful to minimize your child’s exposure to radiation. We use lead aprons and shields to protect your child’s body. In addition, modern dental equipment is designed to focus X-ray beams only where needed. High-speed film and digital X-rays also minimize radiation exposure by 90%.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children with a high risk of tooth decay should have X-ray exams every six months. Children with a low risk of tooth decay can be X-rayed less frequently. We sometimes use a panoramic X-ray to image the child’s mouth and jaw structure. We may also recommend a panoramic X-ray if a child has suffered physical trauma to the jaw.
